Drupal is well suited for NGOs, both small ones with a limited budget and larger ones.
In this talk, we'll present 3 case studies in Latin America:
1) Nick: Itaipu's Water Project (https://groups.drupal.org/node/263833)
The Itaipu Dam, the world's largest generator of renewable clean energy, has a Foundation to promote initiatives around 5 themes: Energy, Environment, Social Responsibility, Tourism, and Technology. The Water Project is an Environmental initiative to promote knowledge about Water all across Latin America. The project's goal is to reach 30,000 people directly and 300,000 people indirectly by providing free courses using both traditional and distance education. These range from basic courses where children learn about the importance of water till more advanced courses where engineers learn about Dam security. Both Drupal and Moodle were used to achieve the project's goal.
2) Leo: MIT Center for Civic Media's VoIP Drupal Project (https://www.drupal.org/project/voipdrupal)
VoIP Drupal is a versatile open source communication toolkit that adds the power of voice and Internet-telephony to Drupal web sites. It can be used to build hybrid applications that combine regular touchtone phones, the Web, SMS, and other channels in a variety of ways. VoIP Drupal has been successfully implemented in various poor communities in Latin America and around the world, facilitating community outreach and providing an online presence even to those who are technically challenged, or who do not have regular access to computers.
3) Molly: RainForest Foundation (http://www.rainforestfoundation.org/)
The Rainforest Foundation's mission is to support indigenous and traditional people of the world's rainforests in their efforts to protect their environment and fulfill their rights. The Foundation currently focuses in 4 countries: Brazil, Peru, Panama, and Guyana. Drupal has been important for: a) building awareness internationally, b) helping coordinate actions with indigenous groups and local grassroots organizations, and c) fundraising campaigns.
